Topic 5:2 Terms NOT Built from Word Parts

Textbook Activity

I. Objective 2: Define, pronounce, and spell medical terms NOT built from word parts. (p. 144)

The terms you will learn for this topic are NOT built from word parts but are terms from modern language and other origins. They may contain word parts but are difficult to translate to learn their meaning.

For example, we consider extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy a term NOT built from word parts, even though extra/corpor/eal and lith/o/tripsy are made up of word parts. However, knowing the meaning of some word parts is helpful when learning the meaning of long, complicated medical terms.

Read the content and complete the exercises. (pp. 144-147)

Check your answers using the Answer Key, Appendix C, at the back of your textbook.
