Topic 10:2 Terms NOT Built from Word Parts

Textbook Activity

Objective 2: Define, pronounce, and spell medical terms NOT built from word parts. (Textbook p. 326)

The terms you will learn for this topic are NOT built from word parts but are terms from modern language and other origins. They may contain word parts but are difficult to translate to learn their meaning.

For example, orthopedics is built from the word parts ‘orth’ meaning straight, and ‘ped’ meaning children. The term originated in the the1800s when the specialty concentrated on correcting deformities of children. It has evolved to mean something quite different today. Memorization exercises are used to learn these terms.

Read the content and complete the exercises. (pp. 326-331)
