Textbook Activity

l. Introduction to the Musculoskeletal System

Your introduction Musculoskeletal System includes a case study where we meet Shanti, who slipped on ice. Her wrist is painful because she used it to break her fall. She has muscle pain all over her body. At the end of the lesson, we will return to the case study, where you will identify medical terms used to document her experience and care.

Read the case study, objectives, and introduction to the musculoskeletal system. (pp. 301-303)

ll. Objective 1: Build, translate, pronounce, and spell medical terms built from word parts. (p. 303)

You will learn word parts related to the musculoskeletal systems and the terms built from them. You will meet the word arthritis, a medical term you are most likely familiar with. However, many people spell and say arthritis as “author/itis” mistaking author for arth as the word root.

Read the content and complete the Exercises. (pp. 303-325)

Use paper or online flashcards to assist in learning word parts.

Check your answers using the Answer Key, Appendix C, at the back of your textbook.
