More than 2,000 years ago, Hippocrates and Aristotle were among the first to study and write about medicine. Medical terminology has been evolving from that time to what it is today.
The brain, spinal cord, and nerves communicate to coordinate body function and activities.
In The Lesson
In Lesson 11, you will learn how the nervous system works, aspects of behavioral health, and the medical terms related to them.
Notes About Alzheimer Disease
Alzheimer disease is an eponym (named after a person). It is named for Alois Alzheimer (1864–1915), who discovered pathological features of dementia while a student.
For clarity and consistency, it is more commonly written as Alzheimer disease rather than the possessive form Alzheimer’s disease.
The ‘i’ before “e” rule does not apply when spelling Alzheimer disease.
